Kya Sands Road faces service delivery neglect

Ward 134 councillor Devon Steenkamp wants Kya Sands Road repaired and cleaned up

Ward 134 councillor Devon Steenkamp has criticised city entities for failing to deliver services along Kya Sands Road.

The busy road, which serves as an entrance to the area, has suffered extensive neglect. Broken street poles, water leaks, collapsing road surfaces, and waste dumped along the roadside have raised safety concerns, especially with children often walking and playing nearby.

Sharing his frustrations, Steenkamp said he has reported the issues multiple times without any response. “It is very frustrating that for years every time I come here there is water running down the streets and nothing is being done. I want to see that the water leaks just stop flowing because it’s really frustrating.

“It makes me think of how much water has been wasted. Rand Water complains that Joburg is losing half its water. Joburg Water needs to take it seriously to stop these leaks; then the roads will also stop deteriorating. Residents here can at least have proper mobility to get to various businesses and access their homes.”

Questions were sent to Joburg Water, Johannesburg Roads Agency, and Pikitup. Their responses will be published once available. Steenkamp said he will continue urging Pikitup to assist with regular refuse collection and tackling illegal dumping.

“City Power needs to ensure that proper streetlights are working so that people at nighttime can have at least a bit of safety. Crime is also a headache in the area. If all those services are just properly maintained, then at least people’s lives are better.”

He added that Kya Sands is a small but clear example of wider service delivery failures. “We’ve got all these service delivery entities that are responsible for maintaining and ensuring that people have the service delivery. It’s in one particular road where you can see a visual of all these service delivery failures.”
