“The pupils were treated to a special screening of the 90-minute documentary Miracle Rising,” said Thandulwazi Co-ordinator Bev Johnson.
The documentary details South Africa’s transition from an apartheid state to a democratic ‘Rainbow Nation’ whose constitution is the envy of the world. “The pupils were absolutely absorbed by the visuals, interviews, and the wonderful South African music woven into the documentary.”
Miracle Rising focuses on the visionary leadership that brought about a peaceful transition in South Africa in 1994 and includes interviews and personal accounts from leading international and local role-players who were involved in the struggle for democracy and social justice in South Africa.
These included Cyril Ramaphosa, Roelf Meyer, Oprah Winfrey, Hillary Clinton, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Mac Maharaj, who posed the key question: “Where have you ever seen a ruling class abdicate power voluntarily?”
The film’s producers Michele Sparkes and Jimi Matthews together with director Brett Lotriet Best then engaged the pupils in a Q&A session, which saw a number of interesting questions posed. “These conversations continued in class long after the screening ended,” said Johnson.
The Thandulwazi Saturday School, an educational outreach programme, offers extra tuition in mathematics (core), physical science, life science, accounting and English to Grade 10, 11 and 12 pupils on 27 Saturdays a year.
