Bromhof or ‘Wastehof’?
The corner of Steenloper Street and Hawken Avenue in Bromhof has been in a horrible state in the past two years.

According to resident Angelique Greer the area has steadily degraded into a major waste dump. “City council has done nothing so far to change the condition in which our area is in. We have had to clean it up ourselves many times,” said Greer.
As a result of the dump site, street hawkers and homeless people have taken up residence in the area. “It is not healthy for homeless people to be living there, or for us. Hawkers arrive with their trolleys and collect building rubble which was dumped, and make the place even dirtier,” added Greer.
According to Ward 101 councillor Ralf Bittkau, Pikitup’s service in the area has not been the best since its last strike. “People are frustrated and dump their rubbish everywhere. Pikitup has not done anything so far to change things. It’s a major challenge for me, however we are working on this and hope to sort it out soon,” said Bittkau.
Pikitup spokesperson Pansy Oyedele promised that the entity would look into the matter and respond to it as soon as they could.
“Until something happens, it seems as if the community of Bromhof will have to maintain the area themselves while they wait for the efficiency of their municipality,” said a glum Greer.
