Crime set to increase over festive season

Sector one comes together for regular meeting, raising concerns about crime and other community matters in Olivedale.

The Sector 1 Community Policing Forum meeting took place on 14 October at the Olivedale library.

The meeting was presented by representatives of security companies, sector committee members, and residents, as well as Colonel Tinus Swart and Constable Mvuleni Mnisi from the Douglasdale Police Station.

The success of their fun run as well as social media was discussed at the meeting, but the main objective was to address crime.

According to Mnisi, crime may increase leading up to the festive season. He advised residents to keep a lookout for criminals and make sure they have tight security at their homes.

“Those who have dogs and jog often should take their dogs with them, this deters criminals from attacking you while you are jogging,” stated Mnisi. Swart gave an overview of the crime percentages in the community, stating that there has been a decrease in theft of motor vehicles, however there has been an increase in assault and drug related -crimes. Despite the fact that crime has slowly decreased, a few residents raised concerns about crime prevention efforts not having an impact.

Night Guard Security key accounts executive Trevor Hepburn said shack dwellers in Olivedale have contributed to crime in the area. Sharonlea Action Group (SAG) committee member Donne Oodthuizen said, “Crime in Sharonlea has increased due to the construction of the new retirement village. The residents association has been on high alert to insure there is tight security”.

Acquired Business Solutions managing director Peter van der Linde explained that the newly installed security cameras in the sector have proved effective. The sector’s committee chairman Margaret van Zwieten said the meeting went well and the next meeting will be held on 11 November at 7pm.
