New coach on the block

Diggers Rugby Club has a new first team coach who aims to turn its fortunes around.

The Diggers Rugby Club has a new head coach on the block.

Derek Page will coach the first team and will train his underlings to triumph with tries and conquer with conversions.

Page was previously coach of Old Selbornians, which won the Border Premier League for the past two seasons.

He knows success and has his sights set on it. However, he is quite relaxed knowing that Rome was not built in a day, and neither can the Pirates Grand Challenge League be won in the first practice.

“Right now our focus is to master the basics and keep things simple,” he said at the Diggers Rugby Club annual general meeting.

“We are doing work on fitness and we want to get good depth. When we grow in confidence we will bring new innovations.”

Beside Page is his sidekick Lodewyk Riekert, the assistant and backline coach.

With these two at the helm the first team will venture to new frontiers, all the while learning new strategies and plays along the path to turning the club’s fortunes.
