Celebrities play action cricket
FONTAINEBLEAU – Idols contestants and 7de Laan's Errol feature.
Some of Randburg’s renowned entertainers can be found playing action cricket at the Randburg Action Sports Arena, Fontainebleau.
Christo Davids, actor, director and writer, better known as Errol Pieterse on SABC 2’s 7de Laan; Graeme Watkins, Idols South Africa runner-up in season five and leader of the band the Graeme Watkins Project; Ryno Zeelie, Watkins’ lead guitarist, and Dominic Neill, who was the top seventh contestant in Idols South Africa in season eight, and who is the leader of The Illustrators, are all part of a group of friends who play for two teams in different leagues at the arena: The Duifkykers (evil eye) and Turf Jakkalse (underdog).
Davids, who lives in Sharonlea, said he plays action cricket every week to socialise with his teammates and their wives.
“I play every week because of the people I play with,” he said.
“We get to see each other, with our wives, and have a drink together.”
Watkins, who lives in Sundowner, said he plays action cricket to relax.
“I play because this is one of the most relaxing things,” he explained.
“My job is stressful so I try play every week.”
Zeelie, who also lives in Sundowner, said he plays action cricket to take his mind off of work because he works for long hours.
Neill, who lives in Randpark Ridge, said he plays action cricket because he enjoys it and the game keeps him fit.
“I have loved the game since I was six [years old],” he said.
“It is nice playing the game. I can escape [from work], there are my mates, and it keeps me fit.”
