Celebrating our women

FERNDALE - Women's Day is here and people are celebrating in different ways. Do you have women who are phenomenal in your community?

In corporate South Africa women can find it difficult to find their footing. It is refreshing to see how a company like Mintek, one of the leading corporates in national mineral research, celebrates Women’s Day with its staff. On 7 August employees were invited to a light session of celebration hosted by the Diversity Forum. Nosi Nyamane, chairman of diversity forum at Mintek said, ”We are celebrating Women’s Day along with 20 years of democracy and to see how far women have come in our industry.” Refilwe Matsose, a local poet, performed poems called I Am Woman’and Women Where Are You? Comedian Mp Mabaso entertained the audience with a lively portrayal of local women in South Africa. HR manager Pauls Gibbons said, ”Science and technology are mostly male dominated, [events like this] help to promotee women across the board.” The corporate services manager for Mintek, Gugulethu Nyanda concluded, ”It is encouraging for us … that they are embracing the women [of the company]”.
