Bertie and Beatrice van Wyk are celebrating 60 years of blissful union.

The couple met in the ’50s while they were both working for Standard Bank.

They got married in Johannesburg on 9 October 1954.

The Van Wyks have travelled and lived in different towns in South Africa including Pretoria, Kuruman, Koppies, Belville, Port Elizabeth and Vereeniging.

They also set sail to England in 1966 and lived there for two years working for the bank.

They settled in Randburg in 1978.

Bertie’s last position in his career was as a regional bank manager at head office in Johannesburg and he worked at the bank for 45 years.

After retiring, he had bird aviaries with prize lovebirds, finches and ringnecks.

Beatrice has been selling Tupperware for over 30 years.

According to their daughter Liezl Slabber, “They are blessed with five children, (all married for many years as well) and 13 grandchildren, ranging between ages of 26 and 10 years old.”

She adds that her parents spend their time by transporting and looking after their grandchildren.

“Their home overflows with love and they have been the pillars of strength in the lives of their children and grandchildren.”
