Wordspinners celebrates another year

NORTH RIDING – Group celebrates another year of encouraging public speaking skills.

Wordspinners celebrated another year of talking, by talking some more at its founder’s month meeting on 9 October. The group was started in October 1938, and over the years has broken off from, and formed, several different organisations.

Its monthly meetings comprise speeches, public debates and items delivered by members with the goal of improving public speaking skills and confidence. Meetings are held at The National Centre Girl Guide Association on Boundary Road, North Riding.

This meeting was themed Keeping in Touch with the World.

Lorenza Tomma opened with an item called Chocolate Chips and Tips. She discussed the etymology of chocolate, and its history as a product. Then she offered two boxes of chocolate, and each audience member had to pick two pieces. The shape of the pieces of chocolate they chose, portrayed their personality.

For instance, those who picked circular chocolates are observant, social people, and those who selected oval pieces are people who stretch their limits and are creative.

Ilna du Plessis then hosted an I spy game where she described architectural wonders of the modern world which people had to guess. The audience was quite knowledgeable as the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the CN Tower and the Channel Tunnel were all guessed. Audience members were then given random impromptu tasks.

Gay Leith had to speak for two minutes about Nokia phones. Rhona Manack had to toast to something. She toasted to Wordspinners’ longevity and success. A debate was then held about whether gender inequality is something of the past.
