Stand off in Kelland

KELLAND – Traffic officer robbed of his firearm and almost shot.

A metro police officer was left unarmed when his service firearm was stolen from him on 30 December in Kelland at around 2:30 pm.

According to Linden Saps Station Commissioner, Modalane Mohale, the suspect robbed the police officer and then tried to shoot the officer with  the stolen firearm. “The firearm did not discharge and the suspect then fled and was  chased by police. He was cornered and we tried to get him to surrender his firearm, he did not want to,” said Mohale.

Nick Papayanopoulos, a witness to the event and a Kelland resident said, “The police waited for him to give the gun back but he didn’t so they called the special task force to help.” According to Papayanopoulos the suspect was shot in the shoulder by the task force at around 7:30 pm.

The suspect was taken to hospital and the firearm was retrieved.
