Fireworks affect animals – full stop

NORTHRIDING – Petition to end fireworks from the Randburg SPCA in 2015.

Randburg SPCA responds on the use of fireworks and its effect on animals during 2014’s festive celebrations.

Pleas and warnings with regard to the use of fireworks were evident throughout social media platforms, news and organisations.

Many animals were found roaming the streets on Christmas, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve in 2014.

General manager Craig Rudman commented that it was a busy year at the SPCA.

Supervising Inspector Debbie Kegel of the Randburg SPCA said, ”It was without a doubt the worst new year experienced in the Randburg area concerning fireworks. Despite widespread media coverage that deployed the use of fireworks in suburban area as illegal, this was ignored. It resulted in horrific situations where animals were lost, others were severely injured and traumatised.

Little or no care was given to the abundance of wildlife or birds in our area. From the night of 31 December 2014 to 2 January 2015, 25 dogs and six cats were admitted to the Randburg SPCA.”

The SPCA pleads with the public to be ”conscientious and report neighbours, using fireworks, to their nearest police station.”

Pet owners who go away for the holidays are yet again reminded that is imperative to ensure that your animals are properly taken care of and safe.

Supervising Inspector Debbie Kegel further adds, ”I would like to thank the public members who so kindly offered to help us with any call-outs for stray animals.

A big thank you to Warrant Officer Mckenzie of Douglasdale Police Station who assisted with call-outs for five hours at the Randburg SPCA over 31 December 2014, as well as confiscating numerous fireworks. ”

A massive drive will be done during the course of 2015 in terms of a petition against fireworks. The petition will be available at the Randburg SPCA for

signatures as well as at Randpark Ridge veterinary practice.
