Randburg the best over Christmas

BOSKRUIN – Randburg Bowls Club hosts and wins large Christmas tournament.

Randburg Bowls Club hosted their second annual Christmas Bowls Tournament between 24 and 28 December.

The club, based in Boskruin, saw one of their own emerge as the ultimate winner.

The tournament consisted of 60 bowlers from different bowling clubs as far as Howick, Pretoria and Krugersdorp.

The tournament was competitive, but still played in a festive atmosphere, with everyone enjoying the music and the festivities, while trying to outdo their opponents on the green.

After the four days, Randburg member Richard Barnard emerged victorious, with 17-year-old junior provincial bowler Ryan Smith as runner-up.

Thanks to the sponsorship of Northwold Spar, they each received R1 000 in prizes. Smith currently bowls at Bedfordview Bowls Club but is in the process of moving to the Randburg Bowls Club. In addition, there were daily prizes for the session winners, and every participant received a prize.

“We as Randburg are very pleased that we were able to host another successful tournament,” said co-organiser and Randburg Bowls Club vice president Alan Durrett. “We as a club feel that this tournament has the potential to become a regular feature on the bowls calendar, where many people who have not travelled away on holiday are looking for some fun, yet, competitive bowls to play.” Club president Laurie Stafford said that the tournament is one of the many activities hosted by the club each year to attract new people to the sport.
