Plans for the heliport cancelled

STRIJDOM PARK – Residents celebrate as Halo Aviation announces decision.

The heliport that was planned to be built in Strijdom Park has been cancelled.

Halo Aviation Director Ryan Horsman announced on 19 January that his company will no longer proceed with construction of the structure that drew so much criticism last year, the reason for which he would not say.

“Halo Aviation is no longer involved in this process and I can therefore not offer any comment,” he said, and would not answer any further questions.

The heliport would have been built on the corner of CR Swart Drive and Fabriek Street for emergency helicopter services.

The project received opposition from residents, the Strijdom Park Business Forum, Village of Golden Harvest Two and Ward 104 councillor Mike Wood last year (see previous article).

Concerns included noise, the 30m-radius safety zone meant to be clear of obstructions but allegedly extending into Fabriek Street or over the Klein Jukskei River, the distraction low-flying helicopters would be to motorists, and the possibility of helicopter crashes in a busy area (see previous article).

Wood said that the cancellation of the project was the “right decision” as the safety of motorists was paramount.

“I am indeed happy to hear the good news,” said resident Petra Mackay.

“As a nation we are so used to having our fundamental rights breached. Thankfully this near disaster has been averted.”

Another resident, Graeme Mockler, said that he had recently seen otter and jackal tracks along the river about 400m from the proposed heliport position, and said that the constant helicopter flights would have negatively impacted on these creatures .
