FONTAINEBLEAU – Domestic workers and gardeners learn the importance of knowing emergency numbers.

Making a Difference (MAD) held their domestic watch meeting on 19 May at the Fontainebleau Community Church. The lesson focused on the importance of knowing emergency phone numbers and looking after oneself. “They [gardeners and domestic workers] need to understand that the most important person in the world is themselves. So if they look after themselves and make sure they are safe by being cautious and knowledgeable they may end up saving another,” said owner of MAD Penny Steyn.

She further advised domestics to make sure they have airtime on their cellphones at all times. The importance of knowing their police station and sector patrol vehicle phone numbers were stressed.” I want you to demand from your employers a panic button. Tell them it is the tool that you require to make sure that you are safe and the house too,” explained Steyn.

If in a position with no airtime on their phone, Steyn stated they should dial 112 as it is a free emergency call from any cellphone. However, if this number is used the exact location needs to be known by the called so emergency services can reach them. Ambulances, police and fire engines can be contacted with the number, said Steyn.

When attacked, Steyn explained that the panic button should be pressed immediately. If that fails, a domestic should make sure they have their employer’s number on speed dial or someone of relevance and then speak to the attacker asking why they are attacking you and mention the address so the person on the cellphone can hear this and call for help.

They were then taught the importance of looking after themselves and their health, including a healthy eating diet.
