RANDBURG – The parking lot at Randburg Home Affairs will be receiving a much needed facelift.

Randburg Home Affairs is arguably one of the best departments in Joburg, but the dilapidated parking lot has overshadowed the good service.

Due to heavy rain in the beginning of January, the tar had been washed away, resulting in massive potholes forming. Insufficient parking bays were also a major problem as many people visiting the department had to find alternative parking.

After many complaints from residents as well as Ward 104 councillor Mike Wood and Ward 102 councillor David Potter, the City of Johannesburg Property Company (JPC) has commenced with the refurbishment of the parking lot.

“This has been a bugbear since 2008 and we are very happy that finally the plan has come to fruition,” said Potter.

Preliminary work commenced on 8 June and the actual construction began on 17 June. The project is set to take six to eight weeks to complete.

JPC senior marketing and communications manager Chantal Janneker said, “On completion, it is estimated that a maximum of 144 parking bays will be available.”

She added that the project will also include resurfacing and reconfiguration of the parking area, new fencing, a new security point and entrances, a new guard house and low maintenance landscaping.

JPC executive manager of Property Management, Fanis Sardianos said in a press statement, “There is very limited parking at the retail complex across Malibongwe Drive, although attempts have been made with the adjacent owners for parking, parking will be limited during the construction.

“Alternative entry points will be indicated on site during the upgrade as well as on posters on street poles along Malibongwe Drive leading toward Home Affairs. The inconvenience is regretted and unavoidable, but will however, lead to a significant improved, secure parking facility for the use of the community.”

Wood added he is delighted that the parking lot is being upgraded and thanked the JPC for responding to the pleas of the community.
