Resident, Sue Cowie, said that the problem has been going on since the beginning of January. Cowie said that numerous calls were logged to Joburg Water to have the sewer problem resolved. “Randburg Water and Sanitation came out twice for the first two weeks. More calls were logged, but they did not keep to the 24 hour deadline,” said Cowie.

The four pools of sewage spread across the play park and attract birds feeding in the pools.

On the late afternoon of 22 January Cowie reported that a truck, supposedly the property of a company contracted by Joburg Water, was at the park to tend to the sewage problem. According to Cowie, a man from the company told her that the storm water pipes were blocked by sand, caused by rain. “They had to blow the sand out of the pipes and would come back this week to pour chemicals down the pipes,” said Cowie. She said further that the smell is a lot better and that the puddles of sewage is gone.

Ward 101 Councillor, Ralf Bittkau, said that he is aware of the problem and had logged a call with Joburg Water. Eleanor Mavimbela, external communications officer of Joburg Water said that the calls have been closed. More questions were sent to her, and comment is awaited.
