Police give safety tips for joggers

NORTHWOLD – Two men attack jogger.

After SABC reporter Njanji Chauke was mugged and almost attacked when he was jogging on Northumberland Road and Aureole Avenue on 26 February, Honeydew Police have provided some tips for joggers to follow.

The reporter went on SABC Morning Live and explained his ordeal and then went on twitter to vent his frustrations and warn joggers.

Personal safety tips were provided by spokesperson Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs of Honeydew Police Station:

  • Be crime conscious and be aware of crime opportunities at all times
  • Run or cycle in a group – there is safety in numbers
  • Walk in well-lit busy streets and in a group, if possible
  • Know all emergency numbers
  • Trust your instinct
  • Avoid going onto a congested street where you cannot walk properly, that is where you will find criminals pick-pocketing.
  • Avoid displaying valuables where criminals can see them
  • Do not wear jewellery – it is tempting for thieves
  • Always let someone know where you are going and how long you will be

gone. Think twice before advertising your impending absence on social

media. Criminals also have access to Facebook and Twitter.

Useful emergency numbers:

South African Police Service Emergency Number, 10111; Crime Stop (report criminal activity anonymously), 08600 10111 and Mobile phone emergency number, 112.
