40 years of serving out the best

BLAIRGOWRIE – Randburg Tennis Clubs shows us just why their angle-game is the best in the business.

Now in its 40th year, Randburg Tennis Club seems to be growing from strength to strength with every backhand. The club hopes that the year will bring even more success for all its members.

Club chairperson for the past six years, Gareth Gibson said that the club currently has about 90 members and holds their club championships between February and March. The club also participates in a league held by the Gauteng Tennis Association. Within the club there is the Advantage Tennis Academy. This academy has been running for the past 17 years and coaches members from ages four to adulthood. “Some of the children who join us either want to play the sport for fun or with the hopes of eventually playing for rank in the tournament,” said Gibson.

The club is also quite proud that a fellow coach, Veronique Luksich, previously made national champion at U18 level. “We also looking forward to taking four of our children to Belgium this year to compete at the Royal Lèopold Club,” said Gibson. The determined children being, Jessica Portwig, Mieke Van Deventer, Evert Van Schalkwyk and Joshua Van Zyl.

Veronique Luksich, a coach at the club said that she started playing the sport after her grandmother bought her first tennis racket at the age of eight. She went on to play tennis at school and also at various clubs until she found her home base at Randburg Tennis Club.

Fellow coach, Kevin Gibson said that for him, tennis runs in the family with his parents having had influenced them to take up the sport. He said that one of the aspects he loved the most about coaching was that he could positively impact people. “As a coach you help people achieve their goals and fulfill their dreams, it’s a great and fun way to add to people’s lives,” said Gibson.

Ryan Beer, another talented coached said he had been a coach for about 13 years and he generally loved all sports but tennis was his favourite by far. He concluded that the club caters to everyone, noting that they train children with disabilities too.
