Butchery brought back to life
DARRENWOOD – A butchery is reopened after surviving smoke damage caused by a fly catcher.
Business owner Riana Lochner has reopened her butchery in Darrenwood after it was damaged by smoke.
Bert’s Butchery was officially reopened on 25 February.
Linden resident Lochner has run her butchery for over seven years with the help of her employees.
“At the time of the incident the Joburg EMS identified the cause of the smoke as emanating from above the freezer. After an official investigation the actual cause of the smoke was a melting fly catcher, that was on the roof of the freezer. I’m glad that the fly catcher did not cause a huge fire that would have resulted in irreparable damage,” said Lochner.
She explained how she was instructed by the insurance company’s investigator to throw out all her stored meat, which the investigator said could be contaminated. The final evaluation of the damage amounted to R300 000.
“After the investigation was completed I hired a cleaning company that does specialised cleaning. They did an excellent job of cleaning up all the smoke damage. All my customers are happy that my shop is open again. They all told me how they struggled to find good meat that they were used to buying at my store,” she explained.
