School starts recycling initiative

MALANSHOF – The school initiative is also helping pupils to be independent.

Pupils from FootPrints Preparatory special needs school in Malanshof had recently started a recycling initiative.

Every Friday morning these school children go around the suburb and collect tins and cans from various households. They then take them back to school where they are crushed by a can crusher which was purchased from funds that were initially raised.

The school then takes the crushed can to a recycling plant. This is expected to raise funds which would go towards bursaries and assist more special-needs pupils to get an education. Sharon Rowe from the school said pupils enjoy the initiative. “They love it,” she said.

“The pupils at FootPrints not only learn about saving the environment but also how to be part of their community and give back to their peers through raising the funds for bursaries,” she added.

She concluded that the pupils were also learning skills which would prepare them to be independent citizens who would be part of the workforce.
