Active community makes an impact

SUNDOWNER – Residents of Sundowner Ext 7 are working together to ensure that problems in their suburbs are solved.

The residents of Sundowner Ext 7 are making a positive impact to turn things around in their community.

Last week, residents held their third community meeting at Honeydew Bowling Club to discuss strategies on how best they can tackle challenges in their community.

More than 60 people from the 172 households as well as security companies ADT and Londoloza attended the meeting.

This suburb has now been demarcated to Ward 134 and has a new ward councillor candidate, Wendy Alexander, who also attended the meeting to listen to residents’ problems.

Residents noted that progress has been made since the previous two meetings. The trees that were a concern in the Tourmaline Park were cut by City Parks and Zoo while all the manholes were repaired by the respective City department.

“We are very happy with the response we received from the City, however, there are still issues which must be addressed with the City and a wish list of action is requested from the ward candidate, Wendy Alexander, to assist our community,” he explained.

Members of the community vowed to take control of their community and would not allow crime elements to hinder their safety.

“Crime is still an issue here in Sundowner Ext 7 but we are currently dealing mostly with opportunistic criminals. Since we have become active residents, criminals are moving away from our area,” he concluded.

The community members are now eager to see that non-operational street lights and roads with potholes are fixed. Residents will also approach the Metro Police to ensure that they enforce the law concerning speeding in Honeydew West and Tourmaline Road.
