UPDATE: Toby goes home

NORTHRIDING – Find out what happened to Toby the SPCA doggie that was burned.

Toby the dog has gone to a marvellous fur-ever home.

Toby, as he was commonly known, arrived at the SPCA Randburg in June after he was found with a large area of his body burned. SPCA inspectors could not determine what he had been burned with, but they suspected boiling water or chemicals.

Toby spent his days in a kennel hoping for someone to give him a second chance. On many occasions, visitors showed interest in him but to no avail. He was still homeless and time was running out.

One day, a kind couple, Kathy Mentz and Paula Goble came across Toby on the Randburg SPCA Facebook page. “I then showed his picture to my partner Paula and then decided to adopt him if he was still available,” said Mentz.

At the time of their query, Toby was marked as a pre-home in his file and he was possibly going home. However, much to Mentz’s surprise, the pre-home was not successful.

The couple lives on a large plot in Brits. “The adoption process didn’t take long at all. We just had to take our other male [dog] Shindu with to [check for] compatibility and it went very smoothly,” added Mentz.

Toby’s day to go to his new home finally arrived on 27 August, when the happy couple came to collect him. “Everything about Toby made us fall in love with him. He is so gorgeous, friendly and lovable,” they said.

Mentz and her partner believe heavily in adoption through shelters. She explained that they would rather support the SPCA because of their work with animals and the help they offer. “Each one of my four rescues has their own story to tell. I won’t buy a pet from a pet shop or a breeder.”

Toby happily licked and jumped his way into the car for the two-hour trip home. He now has a huge garden to play in and sleeps inside on his mommies’ new bed or on a bed of his own.

“He has a huge piece of land to run around with plenty of trees and grass and sand to dig in and just have all the freedom he needs. For a dog that’s been through what he has, I’m amazed that he has such a fantastic personality. This boy has a beautiful soul,” said Mentz.
