Questions surrounding the death of ex-footballer Mark Batchelor have been debated in the media in the week following his death on 15 July.
After the investigation into his death took place, Batchelor’s cellphone that he had with him on the night that he was murdered went missing.
Police spokesperson Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said that investigation into this matter resulted in the arrest of a private investigator, who may be an acquaintance of Batchelor.
As part of their investigation, the police are now trying to recover important information from the cellphone that was erased allegedly by the private investigator as it may contain crucial information surrounding Batchelor’s death.
The private investigator was expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on 22 July but was released due to the matter not having been placed on the court roll.
Some media reports also suggested that a large consignment of missing cocaine that the police are also investigating and his links to South Africa’s criminal underworld may tie in with Batchelor’s murder.
The former football player and TV presenter was shot and killed in a suspected hit outside of his Olivedale home.
Two armed suspects on a motorbike allegedly ambushed Bachelor as he was leaving his home with his gardener, firing multiple rounds into the driver’s window of his white BMW X5 sports utility vehicle.
He was declared dead on the scene inside his vehicle.
The motive for the killing is still unknown and police are continuing their investigation.
