Learner dies after fall from third-floor balcony at Randburg school

RANDBURG – The learner was transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

A youngster has died after falling off of the third-floor balcony of Ferndale High School.

According to a statement on Twitter by Gauteng MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi, the incident happened at Ferndale High School in the early morning of 11 February.

Randburg police could not confirm the death of the child, however, Lesufi later confirmed it in the statement on Twitter.

He said, “Sadly, the boy passed on. Once more, we must go and face the family and break the news, it’s too much now. Our sincere condolences to the family and friends and learners at Ferndale High. This is the 11th death since the reopening of schools this year.”

Netcare 911’s Shawn Herbst said that the school’s staff had provided assistance prior to the arrival of medics.

Herbst said, “The patient was found to be in a stable condition and was treated on scene by a Netcare 911 emergency care practitioner. Once stabilised, the patient was transported by ambulance to hospital for further treatment.”

Ward 101 councillor Mike Wood said that he had been in contact with the school and the parents of the learner, saying that he was more than willing to offer community assistance.

Herbst added that the circumstances leading up to the fall are not known.

“The school needs to be commended on their quick reaction to the incident,” he said.
