Rand Park High School’s first rugby team participated in the annual Cansa Shavathon campaign held at Randridge Shopping Mall on 29 February.
The players participated in this fundraiser as part of their team-building activities and the community outreach work that they have committed themselves to completing during the year.
Funds raised through this campaign will benefit Cansa’s care and support programmes for patients, caregivers and loved ones. The players joined in the spirit of ‘Hope’ which is the theme for this year’s Shavathon and shaved their heads to show those affected by cancer that they are not alone. The coach of the team, Reynier Coertzen, joined his players and supported the campaign by having his head shaved too.
The team has dedicated time and funds to several activities during the past three months. In December, they volunteered their time and spent a day working at the Ann Harding Cheshire Homes where they cleaned the facilities, gym, wheelchairs and other equipment. They also enjoyed a braai with the residents of the home. In February, the team donated blood at a blood drive hosted at the school by the South African National Blood Service.
