The Randburg police are investigating a case of armed robbery after a jogger was robbed while on a run in the early morning.
The station’s spokesperson Captain Makgowanyana Maja said that those engaging in physical activity during the lockdown period should remain vigilant of crime during the lockdown period. “In this case, the victim was a lady who went for her early morning run and was pounced upon by a suspect who threatened her with a firearm and a knife.” He said that the suspect fled the scene and the police are searching for information.
In light of the incident, Maja gave the following safety hints for joggers and runners during this lockdown period and beyond:
• It is not advisable for joggers, and runners to take to the streets in dark conditions on their own as robbers can hide in the shadows just waiting for the opportunity to strike. Criminals can also be driving around looking for a victim.
• People can be less vigilant with headphones on, giving criminals an advantage. Knowing that their victims are less focused means that victims are vulnerable and are also displaying an item of value.
• If you have to run, do it in few numbers adhering to social distancing, which lessens the possibility of an attack. n Try to stay clear of trees, bushes and dark areas and wear reflective clothing.
• People often have the mindset that crime will not happen to them, but crime is dynamic and occurs anywhere and at any time. Vigilance is of prime importance especially when factors are working against you, like early sunsets in winter.
• Always run in well-lit areas and be vigilant at all times.
• Keep your cell phone concealed. Don’t stop to give directions to anyone. Just keep moving.
• Robberies can escalate into dangerous situations when weapons are produced. Life is very important.
The Randburg Police Station Commander Brigadier Michelle Jones advised the community to take heed of these safety hints that can help save lives.Maja further continued to encourage the community to report any suspicious movement/persons to police on 086000 10111 or your sector cell phone numbers.
