Move One Million cleans Strijdom Park
STRIJDOM PARK – Move One Million engaged in a community clean-up of CR Swart Drive in Strijdom Park.
Residents and members of the Move One Million movement engaged in a community clean-up of CR Swart Drive in Strijdom Park on 27 February.

The movement planned to clean the area of litter and raise awareness about the lack of municipal action in the beautification of our suburbs, and the importance of community togetherness. Move One Million member and Randpark Ridge resident Charles Barrell said the group chose to clean up this particular area as they have noted how badly littered it is.

“I, like many of our group members, live nearby and drive through this area every day, and the state that it is in is terrible and appalling,” said Barrell.
Founding member of the Move One Million movement Jarette Petzer said that besides the aim to restore the beauty of areas by clearing up litter, a community clean-up helps to show that residents are willing to take this task into their own hands if the government is dragging their feet at doing so.

“We want to bring municipalities to account and we feel that they have failed us. We do this by encouraging active citizenship in our communities, and this is the only way that we will be able to bring about real change,” said Petzer.
Like-minded community empowerment group Live Life Always was also there to lend a hand on the day.

“We are so happy that we were invited to participate in the clean-up with the Move One Million movement, and we respect the work that they do,” said Live Life Always’ Sean Williams.
“Live Life Always’ initiative focuses on the clean-up of the northern suburbs and we have empowered many unemployed people from the Diepsloot community.’

In the past four months, the public benefit organisation has collected 24 000 bags of trash or around 160 tonnes on streets and open areas across the northern suburbs, working every day of the week.
Petzer added, “We work together in projects like this across the country, and by engaging our communities like this, our movement just grows stronger.”

At the end of the day, 270 bags of trash were collected.

“We would love if businesses in the Strijdom Park area could get involved with our further cleaning, and I encourage them to contact me to find out how they can play their part,” concluded Barrell.
