Cell phone snatching on the rise

RANDBURG CBD – Police urge community members to not walk and talk on their phones in busy areas.


Common robberies are on the rise in the Randburg CBD.

These incidents usually involve a person walking and talking on their cell phone before criminal snatches the phone and gets into a waiting car to drive off.

These are usually unarmed criminals and no further physical altercation ensues, said Randburg police spokesperson, Captain Makwanyana Maja.

“These incidents are happening daily and we urge the community to not walk and talk in busy areas like the CBD,” he said.

“Rather keep your belongings, like your cell phone, safe in your pocket or in a handbag. Only use your phone when you are in a safe place. Also please report any suspicious people or vehicles that you see to the police.”
