Make an eco-brick and change a life
BERARIO – Did you know that just by you making an eco-brick you could change a community?
Did you know that you can positively affect the life of a child and a community all while being in the comfort of your home?
How can you do this? Well, it’s quite simple, actually. Most homes have a drawer dedicated to plastic bags and each week, if not daily, this drawer gets another plastic. What if, instead of putting these plastic bags in a drawer, you rather filled them into a two-litre bottle, making an eco-brick?

Greenpop describes an eco-brick as an empty plastic bottle that is packed tightly with non-recyclable materials, particularly soft plastic, until it becomes a strong and durable building block.
In the Northcliff Melville Times [Week ending February 25], an article was published about Khensani’s Collection, a non-profit based in Diepsloot, which with the help of various non-profit organisations and donations of eco-bricks from communities, managed to have built a classroom made predominately of eco-bricks. This classroom offers extra lessons to children from Grade 1 to matric with a focus on Stem subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).

The building has been in use for the past two years and now the organisation plans to add more buildings made of eco-bricks, but to do this, they need your help. One of the collection points for these eco-bricks was and still is Berario Recreational Centre.
Diana Musara, the director of Khensani’s Collection, is a strong advocate for repurposing plastic and plastic bottles. “Do not throw them away. Once you do that you are contributing to global warming so rather do your bit in changing the world. You can fill a bottle while watching TV with your family,” adding by doing this, you have already made a difference in your environment.
She emphasised this plea, by saying that a discarded plastic bag could have been a child’s school, or a family’s home, or a community’s clinic.
