Fake e-hailing drivers cause trouble
Police urge e-haling drivers to be cautious when accepting rider requests.
Linden police are warning local e-hailing drivers to be more attentive and cautious, as criminals are exploiting their services by using the drivers or their vehicles as getaway cars from crime scenes.
Following a report from Linden police spokesperson, Sergeant Takalani Sibiya, the police were on patrol at 02:30 in Windsor East and came across two suspicious looking males sitting in the back seat of a white Toyota Corolla.
According to Sibiya, the officers on duty said they were apprehensive of the two passengers and queried the nature of their duties and requested to search them. “The driver alleged that he is a ‘Taxify’ driver and he is transporting two passengers to Windsor East.”
Sibiya added that when the police searched the vehicle, they found one 4-pound hammer, one Ryobi angle grinder, one ‘bobbejaan’ spanner, two steel bars and one power bar.
“The passengers failed to explain what they were doing with the tools. Then the police informed them that those tools are normally used for breaking into premises or houses.”
The two suspects [passengers] were arrested and detained at Linden SAPS for possession of suspected housebreaking implements.
According to Sibiya, the area is currently experiencing a rise in house break-ins.
