Northwold resident loves the people, birdlife and scenery in her area
Elvira Dacey has met all her neighbours in Northwold and they are all friendly.
There are not many 74-year-olds out there who still work, exercise daily and volunteer for charity work.
But Northwold resident Elvira Dacey is one of them.
The accountant does taxes in the afternoon but not before she goes for a 6am walk in her neighbourhood and local park, or distributes food to people in need.
“Patrick and I have been here for about 40 years and we just love Northwold and walking to and around Golden Harvest Park,” she said of her and her husband, who have three children together.
“Before that, we lived in Fontainebleau. In Northwold we know all our neighbours. We walk just about every morning and often we go to the park. We are wary because we have been mugged before, and Patrick has been attacked in the park but this is South Africa so it happens.”
She said everyone in her neighbourhood was friendly.
“We lived here back when everything was still sand, since before CR Swart Drive was even built. We built the house ourselves.”
The couple celebrates their 50th anniversary this year.
Dacey does charity work, though she is reluctant of making it public knowledge because she does not do it to receive anything herself.
But without giving much away, it can be said she is part of a weekly feeding scheme for people in need.
Then there is volunteering for the parkrun in Golden Harvest Park.
Because giving is in her nature, Elvira does not hesitate to volunteer often to direct runners, process their results and attend to whatever needs arise.
“We have been walking in the park before parkrun started in 2015. We walked with Kim [MacCallum, the regional parkrun ambassador] and people from Mother of Peace [a non-profit organisation for orphaned and vulnerable children]. The bird life and scenery are fantastic.”
Dacey recommends Northwold and its surrounding suburbs as great places to live in.
She loves classical music and is part of the choir at The Church of St John Northriding.
