Windsor East residents only have each other to blame for sewage leaks says City
Nappies, plastic bags, newspapers and condoms are flushed down toilets and are usually the cause of the sewage leaks.
The issue of sewage pipe bursts in Windsor East is not a new story.
But they will keep happening so long as residents do not take care about what they flush down their toilets, as these are the main cause of blockages and bursts every few weeks.
So, says Johannesburg Water spokesperson Puleng Mopeli and Ward 98 councillor Beverley Jacobs
“Johannesburg Water has on many occasions gone in there with the scoping machines to check,” said Jacobs.
“Ageing infrastructure is definitely a problem. What adds to that problem is the overcrowding in Windsor East and what people throw down the drains. The things that have been found in those pipes have been from nappies to plastic bags to newspapers and a variety of things. Condoms, you name it have been found in those sewerage pipes.”
She said she has asked for the ageing infrastructure to be replaced and is waiting on the City to approve this.
Mopeli added that sand, stones, car parts, grease, fats and oil have even been found in the manholes and gulleys.
And so, Aki Gheothous has his neighbours to be frustrated with every time the sewage streams outside his home on Princesses Avenue.
Still, year after year he endures this and phones the City of Joburg to report the bursts.
“I call them [Joburg Water] every time this happens, and it has been going on forever,” he said.
“My own pipes at home get blocked when this happens. Often, I have to hang up because they [Joburg Water] never answer the phone. Then I wait a few hours and try phone again.”
