Joburg Water finally fixes leak in Fontainebleau

Nombuso Shabalala, spokesperson for Johannesburg Water said that the entity is putting a lot of effort into clearing the backlog.

The company, Honey-Veld Transport was frustrated the past month by the water leak beneath their brick fence on Maria Street in Fontainebleau.

They were also concerned about the possible damage the water was causing on the pavement outside their gate, as well as the water bill.

“It was about a month before they sent out people to fix the problem,” said Anne Walters who works for the company.

She explained the leak started on December 14 and they reported it the same day. “We only received a reference number. We reported it every day. Sending emails to the ward councillor and the management department.”

She added that it affected their running of the business because they had to close the water, and could not use toilets or bathrooms.

“We have staff living on the premises, that did not have any water to use. We had to close the water; we did not have any water for the workshop. Have to buy water to use daily. We still waiting for the account for the water waste that was running for days.”

Nombuso Shabalala, spokesperson for Johannesburg Water confirmed that the incident was reported in December and a job card was subsequently created.

“However, most people had taken leave by that time and the entity was already operating with a skeleton staff. This was the case for the bulk of December 2023 and January 2024. But the teams are working tirelessly to catch up on the backlog.”

She added that the job has however been attended to and repairs have been completed. An on-site inspection was conducted and an agreement between Johannesburg Water and the customer that there were no damages incurred on the property, and the customer is satisfied with the job done.
