Rainbow colours and line dancing at Blairgowrie Rec Centre

The dance instructor, Leon Nel, said Rainbow Line Dancing tries to create an environment where everyone can enjoy themselves.

Members of the community came together for a vibrant Pot of Gold social hosted by Rainbow Line Dancing at Blairgowrie Recreational Centre on February 3.

This special occasion welcomed participants of all ages and backgrounds, including guests from Hodnett House, a daycare facility that serves individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Laughter and clapping fill the room as attendees follow a dance routine.

The event buzzed with excitement as attendees came dressed in rainbow colours, adding to the festive atmosphere. Laughter and music filled the air as participants took to the dance floor to showcase their moves and share the joy of dancing together.

Leon Nel, the dance instructor at Rainbow Line Dancing, shared insights into the inclusive nature of the event, particularly for individuals with Down’s syndrome. “Their parents always have to be with them, but when we invite them to our socials, the parents know that we and the teachers are looking after them,” remarked Nel, highlighting the supportive environment created for all participants.

One of the highlights of the day was the engaging activity known as ‘Touched by the Rainbow’. Those lucky enough to be touched by the rainbow ball were rewarded with bags of chocolate from the pot of gold, adding a sweet touch to the festivities.

Margo Hodnett, Leon Nel and Nomusa Shoba often work together to host events between Rainbow Line Dancing and Hodnett House.

Margo Hodnett, the owner of Hodnett House, expressed the importance of such events in providing opportunities for intellectually disabled individuals to engage with the community. “We have about 40 intellectually disabled individuals who come to us every day to be stimulated. We do a lot of activities and we try and organise events like this to try and get them out more,” said Hodnett.

Rainbow Line Dancing’s Pot of Gold social not only provided a day of fun and dance but also created a platform for people of different backgrounds to come together and celebrate unity. Nel reflected on the success of the event, expressing optimism about future collaborations between Rainbow Line Dancing and Hodnett House, “We work together with them [Hodnett House] and just try to create an environment where everyone can enjoy themselves.”
