Break the rules with Blairgowrie Primary

Azrah Salie, a learner at Blairgowrie Primary School, made a statement by wearing skeleton makeup to school.

Blairgowrie Primary School’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) recently hosted its much-anticipated annual event: Break the Rules Day. This beloved fundraising initiative took a playful twist on tradition by encouraging learners to express themselves through unconventional additions to their school uniforms, all in the name of fundraising.

On the day, learners eagerly embraced the opportunity to break a few rules while adding their personal flair to their attire. From funky hairstyles to stylish footwear, and even bold makeup choices, learners took the opportunity to showcase their unique personalities. Learners each paid R5 for every rule they chose to break. All the money made contributed to the school’s fundraising efforts.

Azrah Salie, a learner at Blairgowrie Primary School, enthusiastically shared her experience of the day, saying, “Break the Rules Day was epic. I could not wait to add my own spin to the school uniform and get creative with my look. Forget boring basics, I went full-on skeleton makeup. It was so much fun transforming – I felt like a total rockstar with awesome cheekbones.”

Laila Seedat, chairlady of the PTA, applauded the initiative as a daring yet innovative approach to fundraising. “Blairgowrie Primary School PTA has come up with a not so typical, might I say quite daring and rebellious, but exceptionally innovative way to create fun and raise money for their school.”

She described the event as a day where everyone gets to break rules within a controlled and playful framework. This year’s rule-breaking options included wearing non-standard socks and shoes, accessorising with jewellery, experimenting with makeup, and even indulging in an unhealthy lunch for the day.

The event not only raised funds for the school but also served as a valuable lesson in self-expression and individuality. Teacher Lauren Matthewson-Woolard reflected on the day’s festivities. “The excitement in the school was palpable and the children were all looking like unruly little monsters.”
