Randburg SPCA rescues two neglected pit bulls

Two pit bulls have been removed from a property in Randburg after neglect and injuries were reported. The SPCA is prosecuting the owner for cruelty.

The Randburg SPCA has rescued two pit bulls from a local property after receiving reports that the dogs had been fighting. Both animals had visible injuries, raising immediate concern about their welfare. The SPCA issued a notice to comply, insisting that the dogs receive veterinary care and a report within 24 hours. However, this directive was ignored.

After failed attempts to reason with the owner, the SPCA obtained a warrant to seize the dogs. Upon entering the property, the SPCA found the pit bulls living in appalling conditions. They were infested with parasites, the only shelter they had was a kennel to small for the both of them, and the water available to them was filthy. One of the dogs, visibly scarred, was so terrified it refused to approach the rescuers.

Both pit bulls are now in the care of the SPCA, receiving fresh water, nutritious food, and proper bedding. The SPCA has confirmed it will prosecute the owner under the Animal Protection Act for violations of animal welfare laws.

Cynthia Bezuidenhout, the Randburg SPCA kennel manager, commented, “it was a complaint we got regarding dogs not being looked after and got into a fight. We were there twice and left warnings, but unfortunately, the owner did not comply. We then obtained a warrant, as the owner ignored us, and did not take his dogs to the vet. They have since been to the vet, both are on treatment, and our behaviourists are working with them. They are terrified dogs. The small boy is not used to any loving human interaction. We will be prosecuting the owner. So, this is an ongoing investigation.”

One of the dogs was found with a thick chain tightly fastened around its neck, which the SPCA had to cut off using a bolt cutter. Furthermore, the owner had installed barbed wire along the fence to prevent the dogs from escaping by jumping over the walls.

The Randburg SPCA stressed that pet ownership requires ensuring the animal’s well-being and quality of life. “If you cannot guarantee quality of life, do not get pets,” they said, adding that animals deserve love and respect as sentient beings.

The rescued pit bulls are now recovering under the SPCA’s care. The case serves as a reminder that animal neglect is not only cruel but also punishable by law.
