The organisation’s assistant secretary, Connie Mboweni, explained that the idea was inspired by the urgent need to address and combat these issues. They aimed to create a platform for unity, dialogue, and proactive solutions.

“Hosting this event was essential because our community is significantly impacted by drug abuse and crime. It was crucial to bring people together to raise awareness, provide support, and find collective solutions to these challenges,” said Mboweni.

The event was honoured by the presence of several notable guests, including Themba Skeem of GP Nzimande, Nkhesani Mashele from South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, community leaders and law enforcement officials.

Community members, young and old, came to listen to the different speakers. Mboweni said the turnout from parents and youth was lower than expected, but the participation from older community members, particularly grandparents, was strong and very encouraging.

“This indicates a solid base of support among our elder residents. We consider the event a success due to the strong engagement from older community members.”

She added they hoped to find sponsors to support children addicted to drugs by placing them in rehabilitation programmes. “We envision these kids benefitting from activities that will keep them away from drugs, crime, and gangsterism. Additionally, we would highly appreciate having a workshop and activity hall in our community to help keep our youth off the streets.
