Blairgowrie residents to play active role in park and pool upkeep

For the first time, the Blairgowrie Community Association will actively manage the park, recreation centre, and pool in partnership with the City of Johannesburg.

The Blairgowrie Community Association (BCA) has been granted an unprecedented opportunity to play an active role in the management and upkeep of its local park, recreation centre, and swimming pool. This was decided during a meeting involving the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture, and Recreation, Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ), the BCA, and councillor Lucinda Harman.

The collaboration marks a significant step for the City of Johannesburg, which is empowering residents to take charge of their own community spaces for the first time.

“This is a huge, progressive step from the City of Johannesburg,” said Harman, councillor of Ward 102. “It allows the residents’ association and the community to take action, make a difference in their area, and bring back the pride, love, and passion for their neighbourhood. It’s about being proud of the place we live in.”

The BCA is wasting no time in putting this newfound responsibility into action announcing that a community cleanup event is planned for Saturday, February 1, where residents will work together to restore the park and recreation centre.

In addition to this, the Blairgowrie swimming pool, which has been closed for the past three years due to faulty equipment, is set to reopen in September. The reopening of the pool is expected to be a major highlight for the area, providing a vital recreational facility for residents.

The decision to involve the BCA is part of a broader push to promote civic engagement and encourage residents to take ownership of their neighbourhoods.

Co-director of the BCA Harold Flieshman commended the move, noting: “This is a chance for the Blairgowrie community to restore pride in their area and create a space that reflects their values and dedication.”

The BCA has expressed gratitude for the opportunity, and is determined to show how a motivated and engaged community can make a difference.

Residents are encouraged to join the cleanup initiative at Blairgowrie Park on February 1 at 09:00 to contribute to the transformation of their community spaces.
