In a statement by DA MP James Lorimer, the victim, believed to be in her 50s, was walking along Garden Road. Witnesses who saw the incident say it was as a result of ‘reckless reversing at speed’.

Lorimer has criticised the City’s silence, saying officials appear to be covering up the incident. “Nobody would have said anything if I hadn’t spoken out. It was so secretive that I doubted it had happened until I visited the scene.”

The MP suspects the City may be withholding information to avoid reputational damage or financial liability. “I’d be very interested to know if the woman’s family has been made to sign a non-disclosure agreement,” he added.

According to reports, police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that a case of culpable homicide had been opened. He said that officers had arrived on the scene to find the woman trapped under the truck. She was declared dead on site.

Pikitup spokesperson Muzi Mkhwanazi is yet respond to calls or messages regarding the incident.

DA councillors have vowed to push for answers, while residents demand transparency and accountability from the City.
