At the beginning of February, a good samaritan in Rustenburg found Phoenix in a terrible state. She had raw, seeping burn wounds, was severely underweight, and was covered in ticks and fleas. The person who found her took her to Mina van den Berg, a well-known rescuer in Rustenburg, and rescue partner of Spaniel Rescue. Mina, Bergbos vet and Spaniel Rescue stepped in to ensure Phoenix received all of the veterinary care she needed in order to heal. When Phoenix was strong enough, Spaniel Rescue collected her from the North West and took her to Vanessa Fitzpatrick of Pet Connect for fostering.

Despite her suffering, Phoenix showed incredible strength. With proper medical care, nourishment, and love, she slowly regained her health. But she still needed one thing: A forever home where she would feel safe and loved.

Her new owners, Bianca and Brett Collyer, from Bromhof, believe in adopting rescue dogs. “We only have rescue doggies because we want to give them a better and loving home,” they said. “We went to see another little pup at Vanessa and she told us about Phoenix and what she had been through. We asked if we could meet her, and when we saw her, we fell in love.”

They were drawn to Phoenix’s big brown eyes. “She looked worried but also full of love. Then she started running around and playing. Our bond is growing every day, and she is becoming a cuddly and loving dog. She is also starting to trust people more, which is a blessing after everything she has been through.”

At first, Phoenix had some bad dreams. “But by the third day, after playing with the other dogs and the little pup, she started feeling safe. Now, she is just like a happy and loving dog.”

Phoenix has also changed her owners’ lives. “She reminds us that no matter what happens, we can get through it and still be happy and loving. She is such a strong pup, and we love her more every day.”

For Bianca and her family, adopting rescue dogs is the best choice. “Getting a puppy is fun, but giving an older dog a second chance is even more special. Seeing them learn to trust and love again is an amazing feeling. From what we have seen, the love of a rescue dog is stronger and more real than anything else.”

Phoenix’s journey shows how love and care can heal even the most broken hearts. Now, she is happy, safe, and loved as she deserves.
