Heronbridge College rugby star eyes professional career path

Junior Kulube, a talented fly-half from Cosmo City, is chasing his dream of going professional, fuelled by passion, discipline, and a strong work ethic.

From watching rugby on television as a young boy, to leading his school team with pride, Junior Kulube’s journey in the sport of rugby is a story of passion, discipline, and growth.

Junior’s love for rugby began early, but it truly took shape at Boskop Primary School, where he started playing. He later joined HeronBridge College, where his passion was solidified. “It was about taking it to the next level,” he says. “It cemented my dream to one day go professional.”

His time playing for the Blues 7s, and the Blue Bulls 7s, helped him mature and grow, both on and off the field. “It was a big learning experience. I learnt to never be complacent and always give my best,” Junior explains. “It taught me discipline, the importance of teamwork, and how to keep my body in top condition.”

Junior holds his time with HeronBridge College’s first team close to his heart, calling it the best moment of his high school rugby career. “It made me realise that it’s not just about me; it’s about brotherhood and playing for the legacy of the jersey.”

He praises the strong team culture built by the coaches, which is grounded in unity and support. “My role is to motivate the squad by following and preaching the values. We are one family – within the team, the school, and the community.”

One match that stands out to Junior was against Midstream. “We got a red card, and heads started dropping. But the crowd got behind us, and that lifted our spirits. Everyone stepped up, and we fought to the end.”

Describing his style of play, Junior says: “I’m happy feet on the field. I don’t rush the game.” As a fly-half, he enjoys controlling the pace, making quick decisions, and setting up smart plays. “It’s exciting. It makes me feel confident to help my teammates perform well.”

Right now, Junior is working on improving his kicking and reading the game better, especially when to pass, play, or kick for space.

When it comes to leadership, Junior believes in leading by example, and being approachable. “Anyone in the team, or even our supporters, should be able to talk to me. That’s how we build a strong team.”

Even with his passion for rugby, Junior knows that academics must come first. “I work late, get less rest, but I manage. It’s about balance.”

His motivation comes from a deep love for the game and his desire to improve every day, for himself and his team. Off the field, he stays focused on fitness, healthy eating, and learning as much as he can about rugby.

Junior looks up to two players, South Africa’s Aphiwe Dyantyi and New Zealand’s Richie Mo’unga. He admires Dyantyi’s speed, heart, and resilience. “He never gives up, and that inspires me.” Mo’unga, on the other hand, teaches him the value of staying calm under pressure and always staying grounded. “Richie reminds me that being a good person matters, as much as being good at rugby.”

Looking ahead, Junior’s goal is to go professional, and hopefully play for the Springboks one day. “I want to sign with a good team or academy soon, and find a clear path forward.”

His advice to young rugby players is clear. “It takes discipline, focus, and respect for your coaches. If you have that, and a supportive home, the sky is the limit.”

Before games, he gets into his ‘game zone’ by listening to his favourite song: Change by NF, saying a prayer, and reviewing game footage. “I pray and ask for protection, then study our opponents, so I’m ready.”

Carrying the hopes of his school and community, Junior admits the pressure can be intense. “Supporters don’t always give room for mistakes, like missing conversions, but it’s a great honour I take seriously.”

With his head high, boots laced, and heart full of ambition, Junior Kulube is a name to remember in South African rugby.
