North Riding rugby star shares recovery tips
Lions backline player Tapiwa Mafura shares how disciplined recovery, family time, and gaming help him perform under pressure and bounce back from injuries.
North Riding resident and professional rugby player Tapiwa Mafura knows that talent alone isn’t enough to perform at the highest levels, discipline and recovery are just as important. The Lions’ backline player recently shared insight into how recovery has helped him maintain peak performance, and bounce back from injury.

“My personal recovery routine, after a match or intense training session, is all about hydration, nutrition, and sleep,” says Mafura. “I make sure I drink plenty of water, Isorade, or even chocolate milk, to replace the fluids I lose during the game. This also helps transport nutrients through my body.”

Nutrition is the next step. “After playing, I eat a big meal to refuel and repair my muscles. I always combine carbs and proteins. It’s the best way to get my energy back,” he adds.
Once his body is fed and rehydrated, Mafura turns to rest. “I aim for at least seven hours of sleep. It’s not just about feeling rested; it’s about being able to function properly and give my best the next day.”
While physical recovery is vital, Mafura also highlights the importance of mental recovery, something he takes seriously. “After high-pressure games, or tough weeks, I unwind by spending time with my wife and daughter. They bring me peace,” he says warmly. “I also enjoy gaming. Fortnite and NBA with my teammates is a great way to switch off and reset.”
Mafura believes that young players who want to move from club to professional rugby must learn to make recovery and self-care a habit. “If you stay consistent, it becomes second nature. Prioritising your recovery is a must if you want a long and healthy career.”

Fortunately for him, the Lions’ team culture makes this easier. “At the Lions, we have access to everything: saunas, ice baths, an oxygen chamber, massage therapists, even a quiet room where you can nap or just relax before meetings. It’s not just individual discipline; it’s a team-wide thing that helps all of us train and feel better.”
Mafura knows first-hand how essential recovery is to maintaining performance. In 2024, while playing in the Currie Cup, he tore a ligament in his calf. “It was a tough time, physically, but the recovery routine I had in place, and the Lions’ support structure, made it possible for me to keep going.”

He views recovery, not just as a short-term fix, but as a long-term investment. “Recovery builds you up stronger than before. Without it, your body can’t repair or grow the way it needs to.”
Whether through a quiet evening at home, a post-match meal, or an ice bath at the Lions’ facility, Tapiwa Mafura’s message is that recovery is not optional. It’s the secret weapon behind every strong performance.
