Cosmo City traffic lights are headache for residents

The traffic lights at Malibongwe and South Africa drives not working properly have led to congestion and safety concerns, with drivers struggling to navigate the intersection.

Just like potholes in many communities, traffic lights have also become a daily headache for many residents.

The traffic lights in Cosmo City, Randburg, and surrounding areas have stopped working, with some having fallen or malfunctioning.
Malibongwe Drive and South Africa Drive is one of the busiest intersections in Cosmo City, as it is close to a shopping centre, and now, it doesn’t have working traffic lights, contributing to heavy traffic in the morning and also in the afternoon.

According to Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA), the route belongs to the Gauteng Provincial Department of Roads and Transport. JRA entered the Service Level Agreement (SLA) with the provincial department in February 2025.

After their agreement, JRA conducted over 200 traffic light assessments belonging to the provincial department, including Malibongwe Drive and South Africa Drive, and discovered that many of these sites had been vandalised by community members.

Acting Head of Mobility and Freight Sipho Nhlapo said: “It has become common knowledge that traffic signal infrastructure becomes an easy target when there is no power supply, for there won’t be any risk of electrocution to thieves. We are in constant contact with Eskom, as the responsible power supplier to the area. They also face the scourge of theft and vandalism of their infrastructure, as it has emerged on several occasions, and we are looking to have a meeting with them.”

The recent breakthrough of advanced technology, which is to be deployed, according to JRA, will help secure the traffic lights and hopefully put an end to vandalism.
