Ferndale on Republic and 67 Blankets partner to keep Madiba legacy alive

Ferndale On Republic Shopping Centre Partners with 67 Blankets for Mandela Day for a knitting initiative on Mandela Day.

In celebration of Mandela Day, Ferndale on Republic Shopping Centre partnered with the 67 Blankets for Mandela Day in a heartwarming, eco-friendly two-day crafting initiative.
The event, which started on July 18 to 19, saw the shopping centre transformed into a vibrant hub of activity as the ambassadors, ‘Knit Wits’, came together with some of the residents to knit and crochet squares that will form beautiful blankets.

These blankets will be donated to those in need, spreading warmth and compassion throughout the community. Collection bins will be set up throughout the centre for community members who couldn’t participate to donate the blankets.

Lisa Mancer, an ambassador for 67 Blankets, explained that they knit and crochet all year round to honour Madiba’s name.

“But today, on his birthday, is more like a celebration and just to create awareness. We knit and make blankets to keep the vulnerable warm. From babies to sick children, the elderly and everyone who is less fortunate than us.”
She added that they had a great turnout, and they are expecting even bigger numbers on the second day.
“It’s been great, taught shoppers how to knit and crochet. Everybody is just working for one course to keep Mandela’s legacy alive.”

On the second day, residents can participate by:

  • Knit a Square: Drop by the shopping centre at the Pick n Pay court during the event and knit or
crochet a square on-site. We’ll provide the materials and a cosy space for you to craft.
  • Donate a Blanket: For those who prefer not to knit or crochet, we encourage you to donate blankets.
