PETCO ehares Mandela Day joy with Suzy’s Day Care
PETCO marked Mandela Day by supporting a local creche, teaching young children about recycling, and honouring a caregiver who selflessly looks after others’ children.
To mark Nelson Mandela Day, PETCO, a producer responsibility organisation focused on recycling, visited a local early childhood development centre to spread joy and promote environmental awareness.
PETCO CEO Telly Chauke said the visit was about more than just giving back. “We believe that teaching children about recycling and protecting the environment must start early. These values need to be part of their upbringing,” she said.

PETCO partners with major brands like Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and Pick n Pay to reduce plastic waste. But this Mandela Day, their focus was on supporting a small centre that looks after the children of domestic workers many of whom cannot afford regular daycare fees.
The centre was selected thanks to Masentle, a PETCO administrator, who noticed the children while driving through the area. She later learned that Susie, who runs the creche from her own yard, often cares for the children out of love, even when families cannot pay.

“When Marcente shared the story, it really touched us,” said Chauke. “Suzy gives so much with so little. We wanted to show that we see and support her.”
During their visit, PETCO also taught the children about recycling and environmental care skills they can carry into their homes and communities.
Chauke said the day was both meaningful and emotional. “It felt good on a human level. This is for the mothers who care for children and for Mother Earth, who continues to care for us all.”
