Blairgowrie Community Association shifts its focus

With the fencing project completed at Blairgowrie Park, the BCA has turned its attention to the pool, with a plan to open it for the public on September 1.

With the fencing project at Blairgowrie Park completed, the Blairgowrie Community Association (BCA) has shifted its focus to the swimming pool.

BCA was given the green light by the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) to look after and maintain the park and the neglected pool. After hard work by the association, Ward 104 councillor Lucinda Harman, Beagle Watch, and other stakeholders, the progress is visible, and the work has begun to revitalise the entire area.

The project is aimed at taking the park back to its former glory. The park had become a home for vagrants and displaced persons, but now, the park has gates, which Beagle Watch opens at 06:00 and closes at 18:00, for residents to access and enjoy the space in safety.

Co-director of BCA Harold Flieshman explained that the residents like the state of the park now, but it’s still early days, as most aren’t using it yet, due to the weather. “The vagrants are still coming to the park during the day. We can’t lock it, but at night it gets locked. They are not allowed in the park after 18:00.”

BCA is confident that they will open the pool for summer on September 1, for the community to enjoy. “We’ve got the pool to do. The rest is cleaning up, and a bit of painting in the toilets, and a bit of painting on the walls.”

The walls have been painted in vibrant colours, and 20 trees, donated and planted by City Parks, have been planted around the pool. “We’ve done the signs, the plants, and the painting of the walls. The pool is the main thing. It’s going to be blue, not white. They’re going to cut out old colour and make it blue with black lines in.”
