Steve Biko’s grand-daughter honours heritage through service

Nearly 50 years after Steve Biko spoke about giving South Africa a more human face, his granddaughter is shaping her own legacy through leadership, purpose, and voice.
Bukelwa Biko, affectionately known as Buki, has completed her matric year at St Stithians Girls’ College with four distinctions in dramatic arts, English home language, isiZulu first additional language, and life orientation.

On June 7, 2024, the St Stithians Chapel erupted into applause when Buki was announced as head girl for 2025. Standing alongside her deputy head girls, she committed to a leadership vision rooted in respect, representation, and passion.
Buki drew inspiration from the African philosophy of ‘Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu’, a belief, she says, her mother often shared with her. She explained that respect for others begins with respect for oneself and that understanding the past is essential to shaping the future.
Speaking at Founders Day, she told the school community that honouring those who came before them is key to defining who they are today. She added that leadership should be lived daily, not simply spoken about.
A strong academic and active member of the school’s transformation committee, Buki found her clearest voice in the performing arts. Through dramatic arts, she explored identity, history, and social responsibility.

Her most significant contribution came as director of the FEDA production Eish!, a powerful work examining patriarchal control within African households. Under her leadership, the production progressed to the FEDA finals and received nominations for Best Director, Best Original Script, and Best Ensemble.
The play was staged at Sandton Theatre on the Square and at RedFest, earning critical recognition. Buki also achieved multiple prestige awards, top results at the Johannesburg Festival of the Arts, and honours in dramatic arts in both grades 11 and 12.
Teachers and peers describe her leadership style as calm, thoughtful, and inclusive. In rehearsals, she created a space built on trust, collaboration, and shared responsibility.
For Buki, legacy is not something written once and left behind; it is ongoing work that demands courage, accountability, and care for others values she continues to embody as she steps into the next chapter of her journey.
