Honeydew Community Policing Forum keeps the elderly up to date with fraud awareness talk

It was a great turnout at the elderly fraud awareness talk, hosted by the Honeydew CPF.

Senior citizens received valuable information at the elderly fraud awareness talk held by the Honeydew Community Policing Forum (CPF) at Tin Road Church.

The awareness talk was aimed at educating the elderly about safety, focusing on online and banking fraud, shedding light on common scams, key warning signs, and the situations where people are most often caught off guard.

CPF public relations officer Michael Steyn explained that with fraud incidents continuing to rise, awareness and knowledge remain the strongest tools for prevention. “Unfortunately, there are constantly cases that are being reported within the Honeydew policing precinct, and most of the time our elderly are involved. They are the most vulnerable, as many times it’s technology dependent, and they are not that clued up. These scammers are professionals at what they do and can be very convincing.”

The awareness campaign was highly successful, with more than 165 residents in attendance. The strong turnout highlights just how important and relevant the topic is within the community. “Our inspiration is to ensure our most vulnerable are being kept safe from scams, and to help them to not be caught out by scammers.”

He thanked the Honeydew SAPS for their involvement in the informative and empowering talk. “Their guidance and expertise play a vital role in helping our residents stay vigilant and protected. Also, a special thanks to Pick n Pay at Summerfields for the snack platters, and the Tin Road Church for the use of their premises, crockery, and cutlery.”

Residents are advised to keep an eye out for more fraud awareness talks coming to other areas, as the CPF continues its commitment to keeping the community informed and safe.
