Shock in shower for Villa Divané residents
City Power has failed to fix the high-voltage issue that is causing shocks for Randpark Ridge residents when using their showers.
Residents at the Villa Divané on Scott Avenue, Randpark Ridge, have been experiencing electric shocks coming from shower taps.
It has been over two months since residents started experiencing an electrical current flowing through their taps. The issue has been reported to City Power, but after their visit to a few houses, they were unable to resolve the problem. Some residents have even had electricians inspect the electrical circuits for a solution.
Resident Denise van Wyk explained that, firstly, she thought it was only her house that was experiencing the problem. “We weren’t talking to other residents, and we were doing our own investigations. We only discovered that it was not only us when a lady put it in the group. But it’s not all the units in the complex affected, which is the weirdest thing.”

She said that most of the double-story units are not affected. “We think it’s got something to do with the phase electricity. City Power sent somebody out to do testing. He saw a problem and he corrected it. Then, when he came into my house, there were still shocks coming off the shower. We turned off all the power, but still we were experiencing shocks with the inverter.”
Van Wyk is struggling to use her shower. Instead, she relies on a back-scratcher or a dry cloth to open and close the shower taps. “You can’t shower freely. It’s a shock. Sometimes it’s like a tingle in your hand. I shower with a plastic back-scratcher, and I open and close the tap with it. When you’re wet, and standing in the shower, you can feel it.”
City Power was sent questions on June 20, but has not replied. Their comment will be published once made available.
