Water shortages and leaks plague Cosmo City

Leaks, system failures, and unclear instructions around prepaid meters have left Cosmo City residents without reliable water, adding to growing frustration in the community.

Cosmo City residents are struggling with ongoing water problems that have left many without a reliable supply. ActionSA Johannesburg Regional Secretary councillor Sello Mabelebele says most complaints are linked to Johannesburg Water’s (JW) prepaid system.

“Many residents weren’t properly informed about how the new meters work,” said Mabelebele. “Contractors installed them and left without explaining anything.”

Some residents now walk long distances to buy water, only to find vendors offline. In Ext 0 and 5, residents can buy water at Shoprite, but even there, system failures are common.

In bonded homes, water leaks are a major concern. “People report burst pipes, but repairs are delayed for months,” said Mabelebele. “The water damages roads and creates potholes.”

Cosmo City’s ageing infrastructure also makes repairs harder. In many cases, residents have built over pavements, directly above pipes. This makes it difficult for JW to do maintenance.

In June, Ext 3 residents were left without water for three days. The city blamed old pipes and emergency work, but slow response times remain a concern.

Water throttling has added to the frustration. Some areas are cut off for long periods, even after water is restored elsewhere.

“People are desperate,” said Mabelebele. “Some even tamper with their meters just to get water. Our community feels neglected.”

He has urged JW to improve communication and service in the area. “Water is a basic need. Cosmo City residents deserve better.”
